Nobody above your bedroom, no car to scrape at midnight. And ten minutes from your porch, the lights go out in the most famous hockey rink in the country, the music comes up, and a brand-new league plays its first game ever.
You came for the hockey. You’ll stay for the walk home in the snow.
The game, plainly
Cosmic Hockey is a new professional league built around the show as much as the score — black lights, loud music, and a crowd that is part of the act. Its motto is “Lights Off. Game On!” The league’s full season starts in 2027. Before that, it plays its first game anywhere in Lake Placid.

How to get a ticket: the lottery
Tickets aren’t on open sale. You enter a lottery at cosmichockey.com with your name, phone, email and zip code. Winners are told by text and email on October 1, and then get the chance to buy tickets.
So if you want to be in the building, enter this week. The lottery page doesn’t list a deadline or ticket prices, so don’t count on a late entry.
And if you don’t win, the block party is free and open to everyone. You can still skate on the oval, meet the players, and be on Main Street the night the league starts.
Why here
A league that wants its first night to feel historic could hardly pick a better room. The Miracle on Ice was played on this sheet of ice in 1980. The arena was renamed for Herb Brooks, the U.S. coach, in 2005. Most people who walk into it go quiet for a second, even with the lights on.
This December, the lights go off on purpose. That’s a very different kind of night in that building.
It’s the second big hockey weekend in the arena this season. The Adirondack Winter Invitational brings four Division I men’s programs over Thanksgiving weekend.
Make it a December weekend
A 7pm Friday game is easy to build a trip around. Drive up Friday, eat early, walk to the block party, stay for the game, walk home. Then you have Saturday and Sunday in the village in December.
The weekend before is the village’s Holiday Village Stroll, December 11–13, so if you can stretch it to a week, you’ll see Main Street at its most lit up. By mid-December there’s usually snow on the ground, Mirror Lake is starting to freeze, and the ski season is under way up the road.
Where to stay
December is fully open this year — all three configurations are bookable for game weekend.
The Studio Cottage sleeps 2 and is open year-round. For a couple coming up for the game, it’s the easy answer: about ten minutes on foot to the arena, and a kitchen for a slow Saturday breakfast.
Bringing the family or a group? The Two Bedroom Cottage sleeps 4–5, and the Dual Cottage Retreat — both cottages together — sleeps 6, with two kitchens and a firepit in a fenced yard. Both are open for December this year, game weekend included.
The main thing: stay somewhere you can walk from. On game night, Main Street parking will be full, the sidewalks will be busy, and walking home in the snow afterwards is half the fun.
Practical notes
- Enter the lottery before October 1 at cosmichockey.com. Winners get a text and an email.
- Dress for outside, then inside. The block party is outdoors on a December evening; the arena is cold too. Warm boots, a hat, gloves you can take off to hold a drink.
- Bring skates if you want to skate at the block party. Rentals may be available, but don’t count on it on a busy night.
- Winter driving. Roads into the Adirondacks in December can be snowy. Plan to arrive in daylight.
