🦃 Thanksgiving in the village, November 25–29

The Two Bedroom Cottage has a full kitchen and a farm table — the two things a holiday actually needs. It sleeps 4–5, or take both cottages together as the Dual Cottage Retreat and seat 6. All three are open this November.

You can smell it from the porch. Butter and sage and a bird that went in before anyone was properly awake, and under it woodsmoke from somewhere down the street and cold coming off the lake. Inside, the oven has been on long enough that the windows have gone soft at the edges. Somebody is setting the farm table. Nobody is upstairs, because there is no upstairs. Nobody is waiting on a restaurant to call your name.

You came for the holiday. You’ll stay because it was the first one in years that felt like it belonged to you.

The weekend, plainly

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. The useful window here is Wednesday the 25th through Sunday the 29th — arrive Wednesday, cook Thursday, and have three days on the other side of dinner instead of a four-hour drive home on a full stomach.

Three things make that back half worth staying for:

  • Division I hockey, Friday and Saturday. The Adirondack Winter Invitational brings four men’s programs — Clarkson, RIT, St. Lawrence and Merrimack — to the Herb Brooks Arena on November 27 and 28, about ten minutes’ walk from the door.
  • Whiteface, most likely open. The mountain usually opens mid-to-late November and went daily the Saturday after Thanksgiving last season. Nothing is confirmed this far out — see the opening-day guide for the pattern and what to watch.
  • The village, before it turns over. Main Street is open and quiet. The holiday lights go up the following weekend. This is the last ordinary weekend of the year here.

Why cook it here rather than go out

Thanksgiving is the one holiday that is structurally a kitchen holiday. Everything that makes it itself happens in a room with an oven in it: the timing arguments, the person who shows up at eleven to peel things, the smell building all morning, the twenty minutes where everyone is standing up and nobody is eating yet.

A hotel cannot host that, and a restaurant can only host the last ninety minutes of it. What a cottage gives you is the whole day.

Concretely, in the Two Bedroom Cottage: a full kitchen — a real oven and a real range, not a kitchenette with a hotplate — and a farm table you can actually seat people around and then leave the dishes on. Ground-floor bedrooms. One front door, one household, nobody’s footsteps overhead at six in the morning. A firepit in the fenced yard for the stretch after dinner when somebody needs air.

And the part people underestimate: leftovers. Friday morning in your own kitchen, cold turkey and the good stuffing, coffee, nowhere to be until the four o’clock game. You don’t get Friday at a restaurant.

Where to stay for the holiday

All three configurations are open this November.

The Two Bedroom Cottage is the one this weekend is built around — sleeps 4–5, full kitchen, farm table. For a family of four or five cooking their own Thanksgiving, that is the whole answer.

The Dual Cottage Retreat — both cottages together, sleeping 6 — is for the version where two households come. Two kitchens, two front doors, the farm table for dinner, and enough separation that the people who want to be up at six and the people who don’t can both have their morning.

The Studio Cottage sleeps 2 and is open year-round — the quiet option for a couple who want the village, the hockey and a holiday that doesn’t involve cooking for nine.

Two things worth sorting early

  • The bird and the big shop. This is a village of two and a half thousand people the week its population multiplies. Order anything you care about ahead, and do the main shop on the way up or on Wednesday rather than Thursday morning.
  • Anywhere you plan to eat out. Village restaurants set their own holiday hours and some close for the day entirely. If you want a meal out on the Thursday or a table after the Friday game, call ahead — ask us and we’ll tell you who’s open.
  • Arrive in daylight if you can. Late November in the Adirondacks gets dark before five, and Route 73 is unlit and full of deer.

Frequently asked

When is Thanksgiving 2026, and what’s the best window to book in Lake Placid?
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. Most visitors book Wednesday November 25 through Sunday November 29 — arriving the day before so the holiday itself is spent cooking, and staying through the weekend for the hockey at the Herb Brooks Arena.

Can we cook our own Thanksgiving dinner at GO-Cottage?
Yes — that is rather the point. The Two Bedroom Cottage has a full kitchen with a real oven and range, and a farm table to seat everyone. Booked as the Dual Cottage Retreat you get both cottages, two kitchens and room for six.

What else is happening in Lake Placid over Thanksgiving weekend?
The Adirondack Winter Invitational brings four Division I men’s hockey programs to the Herb Brooks Arena on November 27 and 28, a ten-minute walk from the cottages. Whiteface Mountain is usually open by then, though the schedule depends on snow — check ORDA closer to the date.

Is Lake Placid busy at Thanksgiving?
Busier than the rest of November, quieter than a ski weekend in February. The holiday lights and the Holiday Village Stroll come the following weekend, so Thanksgiving is the last genuinely ordinary weekend of the year in the village — which is much of its appeal.

Two historic cottages in the village — a short walk to Main Street, Mirror Lake and the Olympic Center. Full kitchen, farm table, firepit, fenced yard, ground-floor bedrooms.

I just want to congratulate you on the exquisite job you did on the Cottages! Did I mention how dreamy the beds are? I had my best night's sleep in weeks. Ahhhhh Oh my god! I just want to move in today. You have such lovely taste. It has such a peaceful aura. We all had a wonderful stay. Thank you again.
