Snow comes down the mountain, from the summit to the porch.

Lake Placid’s first snow, 2026: snow reaches the summits weeks before the village. How the snow line moves down from Whiteface, what opens as it comes, and why the kind of cottage you book matters once it’s dark at five. An owner’s guide.

01 · The window

Six weeks, from the first white summit to a white village.

Snow doesn’t arrive in Lake Placid all at once. It shows up on the summits first and works its way down over roughly six weeks, from late October into December.

The village numbers show the step. Lake Placid averages about 2.6 inches of snow in October, 9.6 in November and 22.7 in December. November is when it starts and doesn’t stay. December is when it stays.

Village averages: NOAA 1991–2020 normals. Any given year can run a couple of weeks early or late.

02 · The rule

Snow starts high and comes down.

It’s the same rule as the fall color, run in the other direction on the calendar. The summits are about 3,000 feet above the village, which is often the difference between snow up there and rain down here.

  • Whiteface summit (4,867 ft): rime ice is on the summit about ten months a year. The first dustings that stay usually come in late October.
  • High Peaks (4,000 ft+): white through November, with the line climbing back up after every warm spell.
  • Village (1,801 ft): early snow melts off. Ground that stays white usually comes in December.
Watch it from below: on a clear morning after a storm, the snow line is a sharp edge across the mountains, and it sits a little lower each week.

03 · The exception

The one place snow works uphill.

Whiteface’s ski base sits at 1,220 feet, lower than the village. So the ski trails don’t wait for the snow line. The snowmakers build the season from the bottom up.

  • Snowmaking started November 1 last season, the earliest start the general manager could remember in about two decades.
  • Opening day is usually mid-to-late November, and Whiteface is usually the first mountain open in New York. Last season it opened November 15. Weekends come first, then daily runs from around Thanksgiving.
  • Mt Van Hoevenberg keeps last winter’s snow through the summer under a layer of wood chips, then spreads it on the cross-country trails in November.
No 2026 date is set. ORDA confirms opening about a week out. Watch whiteface.com from early November.

04 · Watching it come down

Where to see the line from.

The Veterans’ Memorial Highway to the summit closes for the season in mid-October, so in November you watch from below, which is the better view anyway.

  • Route 86 to Wilmington: fifteen miles, past the ski trails on Whiteface. Once the snowmakers start, you can see the white trails on the brown mountain.
  • Route 73 through Cascade Pass: the High Peaks up close, with the snow line right above the road.
  • Cobble Hill: a short village hike to a wide view of the peaks. In November, bring traction for your boots.
Best light is the first clear morning after a storm, before the sun gets onto the south faces.

05 · The calendar

The village fills up as the snow arrives.

The snow line and the calendar move down together:

  • Nov 5–8: Lake Placid Film Festival.
  • Mid-to-late November: Whiteface opening weekend, date to be confirmed.
  • Nov 27–28: Adirondack Winter Invitational, Division I hockey at the Herb Brooks Arena over Thanksgiving.
  • Dec 11–13: Holiday Village Stroll.
  • Dec 31: North Country New Year.
Early November is the quiet stretch: summits white, village calm, rooms open.

06 · Why it matters

Once it’s dark at five, the cottage matters more.

In late fall the days are short. You’re back from the mountain or the trail by dark, which comes before five. Then there are boots in the hallway, wet gloves to dry, and dinner to make. That’s when the kind of place you booked starts to matter.

  • Freestanding: one building on its own lot, with no shared walls or hallway.
  • Ground-floor bedrooms: nobody walking around above you at six a.m.
  • A real kitchen: the Two Bedroom has a full kitchen and a farm table, and a firepit in the fenced yard for a clear, cold night.
Our Studio and Two Bedroom cottages fit that description. Both sit in the village, 15 miles from the Whiteface base.

You come up to watch the snow come down the mountain. You leave with snow on the porch.

Where to stay as the snow comes in

November and December are open this year in all three configurations. That doesn’t happen every year, and the Thanksgiving and New Year weekends fill first.

  • Studio Cottage: sleeps 2. A couple’s base for first turns and a quiet village week.
  • Two Bedroom Cottage: sleeps 4–5. A full kitchen, a farm table, and a firepit in the fenced yard.
  • GO-Cottage Dual Cottage Retreat: both cottages together, sleeps 6. Two front doors, so the first-chair crowd and the slow-morning crowd don’t have to agree.

Pets are welcome in both cottages at $25 per night per pet.

Coming up for the first snow?

November is wide open, and early December is quiet until the Holiday Stroll weekend. Book a flexible weekend and let the forecast pick the day.

Frequently asked questions

When does it start snowing in Lake Placid?

The summits usually see snow that sticks in late October. The village at 1,801 feet averages about 2.6 inches in October and 9.6 in November, which often melts off. Snow cover that lasts usually arrives in December, when the average is 22.7 inches (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).

Why do the mountains get snow before the village?

Elevation. Whiteface’s summit is 4,867 feet and the village is 1,801. That 3,000-foot difference is often the line between snow on the peaks and rain in the village, so each storm leaves the snow line a little lower until it reaches the village.

When does Whiteface open for skiing?

Usually mid-to-late November, often first in New York State. Last season it opened November 15 and went to daily operations on November 28. ORDA confirms opening about a week ahead, so no 2026 date is set yet.

Can I drive to the top of Whiteface in November?

No. The Veterans’ Memorial Highway is a summer and fall road. It typically runs from mid-May to mid-October and closed October 13 last season. In November the best views of the snow line are from Route 86, Cascade Pass on Route 73, and Cobble Hill.

Is November a good time to visit Lake Placid?

If you like quiet, yes. The summits are white, Whiteface usually opens partway through the month, the Film Festival runs November 5–8, and the village is calm until Thanksgiving weekend. Expect short days. It’s dark before five.

I just want to congratulate you on the exquisite job you did on the Cottages! Did I mention how dreamy the beds are? I had my best night's sleep in weeks. Ahhhhh Oh my god! I just want to move in today. You have such lovely taste. It has such a peaceful aura. We all had a wonderful stay. Thank you again.
