All around the world there have been massive storms and upside down temperatures. We’ve been getting our own extreme weather in Lake Placid too. During the month of February it was 60 degrees and dropped to 15 degrees in the same day!
This created a serious wind and ice storm that left Lake Placid looking like a bomb went off: trees and power lines down everywhere. So it was pretty scary! This storm took out all the power in town and nearby towns for 19 hours. Brrr!! It was not fun!
This started us thinking about safety measures and ways to avoid drastic outages in the future.
- Make sure you are stocked up on candles and flashlights and back up food items. For example, canned, boxed, etc.
- Consider getting a generator. You can connect it directly to your power source and it will automatically switch over if the power goes out. They cost between $4000 and 10,000.
- Also consider investing in a wood burning stove ($1000-3500). Make sure your chimney is up to regulations or you’ll have to cut a hole. I like wood because there’s a lot of it in Lake Placid.
- Solar panels. I love this option too but you need a lot of sunlight.
- So do your homework and research, research, research.
All in all, be prepared and be ready for anything!
