⛷️ Chasing first turns in November?

All three cottages are open this November — the Studio, the Two Bedroom, or both together as the Dual Cottage Retreat, which sleeps 6. Fifteen miles from the Whiteface base, in the village, with a real kitchen and somewhere to dry your gear.

Cold that wasn’t there last week. Bare maples on the drive out Route 86, and then one white ribbon running down a brown mountain. Boots in the hallway, wet gloves on the radiator, coffee at six because the lifts spin at ten. Nobody above you at midnight, no corridor, no lift-line hotel breakfast. Just your own kitchen and a day that starts when you say it does.

You came for the first turns. You’ll stay for the quiet that comes after them.

When Whiteface opens — honestly

Nobody knows yet, including Whiteface. Opening day is set by snow and temperature, and ORDA confirms it roughly a week out. Anyone quoting you a firm date in early October is guessing.

What we can tell you is the pattern, which is unusually consistent:

  • Mid-to-late November, almost every year. Last season Whiteface opened Saturday, November 15.
  • Usually first in New York State. That was true again last year, and it’s the reason opening weekend draws people from well outside the Adirondacks.
  • Weekends first, daily from around Thanksgiving. Last season the mountain ran opening weekend only, then went daily on November 28.
  • Snowmaking starts well before the lifts do. Last year it began November 1 — which the general manager, Aaron Kellett, called the earliest start he could remember in about two decades at the mountain.

For what it’s worth, the industry trackers currently project around November 21 for 2026, with Gore and Belleayre a day earlier. Treat that as a planning marker, not a date. Watch whiteface.com from the first week of November.

What opening weekend is actually like

This is the part worth setting expectations on, because early-season skiing is its own thing and people who arrive expecting February are disappointed by something that was never on offer.

Last year’s opening weekend ran seven trails and two lifts — the Face Lift and the Summit Quad — on Riva Ridge, Paron’s Run, The Follies, Excelsior, Ilmar’s Alley, Lower Northway and Summit Express. Lifts turned 10am to 3pm. By Sunday it was eight trails, and wind shut the lifts early in the afternoon.

That is a real day of skiing and a short one. The snow is a mix of natural and manufactured, the groomers have had a week rather than a season, and the crowd is bigger than the terrain because it’s the only mountain open in the state. People who go know all this and go anyway. First turns are first turns.

Two things follow from it. Book a flexible day, not a fixed one — wind holds happen in November. And have a second plan, which the village gives you and a slopeside hotel doesn’t.

Last season’s opening-weekend tickets

Adults (20–64) $65 · Teens (13–19) and seniors (65–69) $55 · Juniors (7–12) $45 · 70+ $40 · 6 and under $10

Why stay in the village instead of at the mountain

Whiteface is in Wilmington, 15 miles east of Lake Placid village on Route 86 — about fifteen minutes. There is no slopeside village at the base. Wilmington is a handful of places, and in mid-November a good number of them haven’t opened for the winter yet.

Lake Placid in the third week of November is a village that has woken up but hasn’t filled. Main Street is open. You can get a table. And if the wind takes the lifts at one o’clock, you are fifteen minutes from somewhere with a rink, a museum and an afternoon in it rather than fifteen minutes from your car in a parking lot.

The following weekend, the village stops being quiet: the Adirondack Winter Invitational brings four Division I hockey programs to the Herb Brooks Arena over Thanksgiving, the same week Whiteface usually goes daily. If you can take the week, the back half of November is ski mornings and hockey nights.

Where to stay

November is open this year — all three configurations, which hasn’t always been true.

The Studio Cottage sleeps 2 and is the simple answer for a couple driving up for a weekend. The Two Bedroom Cottage sleeps 4–5 and suits a family where somebody skis and somebody doesn’t. The Dual Cottage Retreat — both cottages together, sleeping 6 — is the one for a group splitting a ski weekend: two kitchens, two front doors, a firepit in a fenced yard, and enough separation that the first-chair crowd and the slow-morning crowd don’t have to agree.

What all three give you that a hotel room doesn’t, in November specifically: somewhere to cook when you get back after dark, and somewhere to put wet gear that isn’t the foot of a bed.

Practical notes for a November ski weekend

  • Check the morning of. Terrain and lift status change daily this early. Whiteface posts conditions before the lifts spin.
  • Expect a short day. Last year’s opening hours were 10am–3pm. There is no night skiing.
  • Bring a wind layer. Whiteface takes weather from the top down, and November wind is what closes the upper lifts.
  • Route 86 in the dark. It’s an easy road, but it’s unlit and it hosts deer. Give yourself the twenty minutes rather than the fifteen.
  • Rentals and lessons run from opening weekend, but early-season inventory moves fast. Book ahead rather than at the counter.

Frequently asked

When does Whiteface open for the 2026–27 season?
Whiteface has not confirmed a date — opening depends on snowmaking weather, and ORDA typically announces about a week ahead. The mountain usually opens in mid-to-late November and is often the first ski area open in New York State. Last season it opened November 15.

Is Whiteface open every day in November?
Not at first. Last season Whiteface ran opening weekend only, then began daily operations on November 28, around Thanksgiving. Plan an early-season trip around a weekend unless the mountain has announced daily operations for your dates.

How far is Whiteface from Lake Placid?
Whiteface Mountain is in Wilmington, 15 miles east of Lake Placid village on Route 86 — about fifteen minutes by car. There is no slopeside village at the base, which is why most visitors stay in Lake Placid and drive out each morning.

What is skiing at Whiteface like in November?
Limited and genuinely good. Last year’s opening weekend ran seven trails and two lifts, 10am to 3pm, on a mix of natural and manufactured snow. Wind can close the upper lifts. Keep the day flexible and have something else planned in the village.

Two historic cottages in the village — 15 miles from the Whiteface base, a short walk to Main Street and Mirror Lake. Firepit, fenced yard, real kitchens, ground-floor bedrooms.

I just want to congratulate you on the exquisite job you did on the Cottages! Did I mention how dreamy the beds are? I had my best night's sleep in weeks. Ahhhhh Oh my god! I just want to move in today. You have such lovely taste. It has such a peaceful aura. We all had a wonderful stay. Thank you again.
