Paint! Great For Freshening Up Your Kitchen

There’s nothing I love more than a fresh coat of white paint! The 2-bedroom cottage’s kitchen really needed a freshening up. After years of bacon grease and other stuff, the wall behind the oven was looking pretty gross! So being a clean freak, I couldn’t take it any longer and was determined to make it shine!

We originally completely renovated the kitchen, so a fresh coat of paint was a much quicker way to bring it back to life.

First you need to clean the walls by sanding them. There are different types of sanders, but 100 grit is the least invasive.

You’ll want to sand other surfaces you’re painting, such as window and door frames. And things will go more smoothly if you chip away at any old paint residue.

After you’ve sanded from top to bottom, take a clean sponge or a Swiffer and wipe the walls down. Be sure to get all the sand particles and dust. Then dry it. This can take a couple hours depending on how big the room is. Remember, painting is all about the prep!

After that, you need to tape all the moldings and corners. I like to use blue tape because it doesn’t leave any kind of residue. It also makes things easier if you cover any surfaces (like appliances) that you don’t want to get paint on.

Once that’s all done, it’s time to get painting. First, prepare you colors. I used 3 different paints for the kitchen: Warm White and Eggshell White for the walls, Super White/semi-gloss for moldings and doors or any type of wood.

Begin with painting the corners and the ends. You’ll want to use a good angled brush – I also like natural fibers. After that, fill in the walls with a roller. Tada – you’re done! This room took about 4 days to do.

What are your favorite ways to hit refresh on your home?

I just want to congratulate you on the exquisite job you did on the Cottages! Did I mention how dreamy the beds are? I had my best night's sleep in weeks. Ahhhhh Oh my god! I just want to move in today. You have such lovely taste. It has such a peaceful aura. We all had a wonderful stay. Thank you again.
