Do you have any holes in your lawn? If you do, then it’s probably time to patch your grass!

Here are a few simple steps to patch your lawn when it needs an overhaul. You’ll need fresh dirt, seed, fertilizer, and hay (or old grass):

  • First, break up all the dirt that’s there and remove any sand or stones. I like to use a shovel and heavy duty rack – and, of course, my hands.
  • Next, spread new soil all around the area. You can buy soil at any garden store. I like to use potting soil.
  • Next, sprinkle the grass seed all around the hole. Be sure to spread it evenly and in large amounts.
  • Sprinkle fertilizer on top of the seed. Don’t be shy.. use a lot of this stuff!
  • Finally, lay down hay or old grass. I like to use the old grass that I save when mowing the lawn.

It’s very important to keep the lawn hydrated. Start by watering it three times a day – morning, noon, and night. After 1 week, water it twice a day, in the morning and at night. Then watch it grow! If you make sure it’s watered throughout the summer, then you should be all set.

This Old House also has a good video on how to patch a lawn. For more lawn tips, check out our blog on grass cutting!

I just want to congratulate you on the exquisite job you did on the Cottages! Did I mention how dreamy the beds are? I had my best night's sleep in weeks. Ahhhhh Oh my god! I just want to move in today. You have such lovely taste. It has such a peaceful aura. We all had a wonderful stay. Thank you again.
