📣 Planning your Road Worlds trip?
Our GO-Cottage Dual Cottage Retreat — Studio Cottage + Two Bedroom Cottage together, sleeps 6 — sits in the historic Lake Placid village core, just 130 miles south of Montréal. Ideal for cycling groups, extended families, or crews who want to ride the Adirondacks and Vermont Gaps for a week and drive up for race days.
The event, plainly
From September 20–27, 2026, Montréal hosts the UCI Road World Championships — 1,000 athletes from more than 80 countries, 13 races across eight days, in front of a global TV audience of 200 million across 140 countries. The Montréal 2026 organizing committee calls it “the biggest event the city has seen since the 1976 Olympic Games.”
It’s also historic in another way: the first time UCI Road Worlds was held outside Europe was Montréal, 1974. Fifty-two years later, the championship returns to the city that first hosted it globally. That kind of heritage matters to serious cycling audiences.
One day earlier — Friday September 19 — the fan-participatory Rando Vélo Beneva opens the whole week. It’s the “you can ride too” opener, and it’s what makes this a *cyclist’s* event, not just a *fan’s* event.

Here’s the trick nobody’s talking about
Downtown Montréal hotel rooms during Road Worlds week will be scarce, expensive, and — for a cyclist — the wrong base. You didn’t fly across the world (or drive up from New York or Boston) to ride an urban bike lane between hotel restaurants.
You flew in to ride. And 130 miles south of Montréal, across the U.S. border, sits some of the greatest road cycling terrain in the country. The Adirondacks and Vermont Gaps — a region that has drawn serious cyclists for a century and that hosts the annual Ironman Lake Placid course, the Whiteface Uphill Race, and every legendary northeast Vermont climb within reach of a single-day round trip.
Base in Lake Placid. Ride the region. Drive to Montréal for race days — 130 miles is about the same as New York to Philadelphia, or Boston to Providence-and-back. Same day, easy trip. That’s the whole setup.
The rides — this is why you’re coming
1. The Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway climb
Five miles from Wilmington to the summit of Whiteface Mountain — 4,867 feet, the fifth-highest peak in New York. The road climbs to a stone castle, café, and elevator that takes you the final few hundred feet on foot. Steep pitches, cyclable to the top, one of the toughest sustained climbs in the eastern U.S. It hosts the annual Whiteface Uphill Race for exactly this reason.
Ride it once. You’ll remember it.
2. The Ironman Lake Placid Loop
The full Ironman Lake Placid Loop — the same course pros race every July, ridden year-round by serious cyclists from around the world. Rolling terrain, Adirondack scenery, no less than iconic in triathlon culture. Some of the roads (including River Road and the climb up “Papa Bear” hill) are recognizable to anyone who’s followed the sport.
3. Wilmington Notch + AuSable River Loop
Between Lake Placid and Wilmington, Wilmington Notch is a dramatic pass through vertical rock cliffs beside the AuSable River. The AuSable River Loop extends the ride further, past the covered Jay bridge, along one of the most photographed rivers in the northeast.
4. Lake Champlain Bikeways + the ferry crossings
The Lake Champlain Bikeways network is what turns this from an Adirondack ride into a two-country, two-state ride. From Lake Placid, drive or ride east to Essex, NY — the closest ferry crossing for reaching the Vermont Gaps — and take the Charlotte–Essex ferry across.
The verified specifics that matter for planning:
- 3 miles across, 25-minute crossing. Scenic views of both the Adirondacks and Green Mountains on the way over.
- First ferry: 6:00 AM from Charlotte VT; 6:30 AM from Essex NY. Last ferry: 8:00 PM from Vermont, 8:30 PM from New York.
- Runs roughly hourly through the day, with 30-minute midday service from about 10 AM through 5:30 PM.
- Bicyclist fare: $6.75 each way. Driver + vehicle: $12.25 each way. Adult passenger: $5.50.
- No reservations. Arrive at the dock 15 minutes before your desired departure.
The other Lake Champlain crossings — Grand Isle VT ↔ Plattsburgh NY (further north) and the seasonal Ticonderoga ↔ Larrabees Point (far south) — are options too, but for a Lake Placid base heading to the Vermont Gaps around the Mad River Valley, Charlotte–Essex is the natural crossing.
5. The Vermont Gaps — App Gap, Lincoln Gap, and more
Ferry across Lake Champlain and you’re within a short drive of the Gaps of Vermont: App Gap (Appalachian Gap), Lincoln Gap, Middlebury Gap, Roxbury Gap, Brandon Gap. Lincoln Gap is famously one of the steepest paved climbs in the U.S. (24% pitches). App Gap is the Gaps loop’s most iconic single climb. Serious cyclists cross a continent to ride these.
From Lake Placid, an App Gap day is a real day: drive to Essex NY, catch the 6:30 AM ferry across (25-minute crossing), ride the climb, back on an afternoon ferry, drive home for dinner at the cottage. It’s a real trip inside a trip.
6. Styles Brook Road + the quieter climbs
For the day you don’t want to plan — just point yourself at Styles Brook Road, Bear Cub Road, the Franklin Falls Loop, or any of the region’s dozen named smaller loops. The official lakeplacid.com cycling page lists 20+ routes; you can’t ride them all in a week if you tried.
Yes, you can ride in Montréal — but it’s urban
Montréal has real bike infrastructure — dedicated lanes, the BIXI bike-share network, the Lachine Canal path, Mont-Royal loops. It’s a genuinely bike-friendly city. If your Road Worlds week is short and urban riding is all you have time for, you’ll have a good time.
But you’ll be riding in a city. The Adirondacks and Vermont Gaps are why cyclists cross the world for this region. Base 130 miles south, ride the terrain, drive up for the pro races. That’s the trip nobody at a downtown Montréal hotel is going to have.
The week, day by day (one way to do it)
Fri Sept 18 · Arrival
Fly into Burlington VT or Plattsburgh NY (both under an hour). Drive to Lake Placid, drop bags at the cottage, quick spin on River Road as a shakeout. Firepit at dusk while dinner comes together in your own kitchen.
Sat Sept 19 · The Rando Vélo Beneva opens Road Worlds
Drive to Montréal for the fan-participatory Rando Vélo Beneva — the opening bike ride of the whole championship week. Ride the same city streets the pros will race. Back to Lake Placid for dinner.
Sun Sept 20 – Wed Sept 23 · Ride the region
Whiteface climb one day, Ironman Loop another, drive to Essex NY and catch the 6:30 AM ferry across for a Vermont Gap day, quieter local loops the fourth. Elite Time Trials are running in Montréal these days — catch the TV in the evening at Lake Placid Pub & Brewery on Main Street. Sleep, eat, repeat.
Thu Sept 24 – Sun Sept 27 · Montréal race days
Drive to Montréal for the marquee races — the U23 and Elite road races over the closing weekend. Free course-side spectating; grandstand and hospitality options available via the Montréal 2026 site. Sunday’s Elite Men’s Road Race is the crown jewel. Drive back Sunday evening, one more ride Monday morning if you can hang around.
Why the cottage matters for a cycling week
Cycling seven days across two countries with real climbs isn’t a hotel-lifestyle trip. It’s a wash-your-kit, prep-tomorrow’s-pasta, get-up-at-5:30 kind of trip. What the cottage gives you that a hotel can’t:
- A real kitchen. Cook your own pasta the night before an App Gap day. Own oatmeal at 6am before you drive to Montréal. Recovery eggs after a Whiteface climb. Nutrition on your schedule, not a restaurant’s.
- A ground-floor bedroom. No one walking on the ceiling at 6am the day you need to be at the ferry at 7. No slamming hotel doors down the hall the night before a hundred-mile ride.
- A firepit. The team gathering point after the ride. Pine cracking against cold September Adirondack air. Somebody brought bourbon.
- A fenced yard. For the dog you brought (or the coach’s dog, or the mechanic’s dog — cycling crews and dogs go together). No leash-required elevator trips to a hotel parking lot.
- Room for the bikes. Standing them in a hallway, not stacking them under a hotel bell-desk sneer.
- The whole household under one roof. Two riders, a spectator partner, a coach, the kids — six people, one door, one kitchen. Booked as the Dual Cottage Retreat, that’s the whole crew under one roof for a week.
Border crossing, plainly
Lake Placid to Montréal is ~130 miles, about 2 hours by car via Interstate 87 north to the Canadian border at Champlain, NY / Lacolle, QC, then Autoroute 15 into Montréal.
Passport required (or NEXUS if you have it). U.S. and Canadian residents need to check current 2026 entry requirements — CBP travel for U.S. and travel.gc.ca for Canada. Expect longer border waits on race weekend (Sept 26-27) than midweek.
If you’re driving multiple times during the week, keep passports and border-crossing documents in the same place every trip. Small mercy.
Where to stay for the week
Lake Placid village puts you in the middle of the riding and within an easy drive to Montréal race days. Historic village cottages — walkable to Main Street dinner, quiet at night, real kitchen — are the specific fit for a cycling week.
We run two cottages in the village: Studio Cottage (sleeps 2), Two Bedroom Cottage (sleeps 4–5), or both together as the GO-Cottage Dual Cottage Retreat (sleeps 6). Short walk to Main Street. 2-minute drive to Mirror Lake. Firepit. Fenced yard. Real kitchen. Pet-friendly at $25/night per pet.
For the full village-vs-Wilmington, cabin-vs-cottage, honest-amenities picture of Lake Placid lodging, see our Lake Placid Cabin Rentals Complete Guide.
A second UCI event the following week
Worth knowing: the 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Series — the final round of the World Cup, crowning the year’s overall Downhill and Cross-Country champions — is held at Mt Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface Mountain Oct 2–4, 2026. Five days after Road Worlds ends. If your calendar allows, you can catch both UCI world-tier events from a single Lake Placid base with a week between. Two UCI events, one cottage, one continent.
Book fast
Two truths worth naming:
- Downtown Montréal lodging during Road Worlds week is expensive and scarce. Rooms at Delta, Le Westin, and comparable central hotels have been booking since 2025. Lake Placid overflow-of-Montréal traffic hasn’t fully priced yet — the arbitrage is real but not permanent.
- Historic Lake Placid village cottage inventory doesn’t grow. Two cottages, one Dual booking. If you want the walk-to-Main-Street, firepit-at-night, cook-your-own-pasta version of race week, book now.

Frequently Asked Questions: Road Worlds 2026 from Lake Placid
When is the 2026 UCI Road World Championships?
The 2026 UCI Road World Championships run September 20–27, 2026, in Montréal, Québec, Canada. The fan-participatory Rando Vélo Beneva opens the week on September 19. Thirteen races across eight days, 1,000 athletes from more than 80 countries. Full details at montreal2026.org.
How far is Lake Placid from Montréal?
About 130 miles, roughly 2 hours by car via Interstate 87 north to the Canadian border at Champlain, NY / Lacolle, QC, then Autoroute 15 into Montréal. A passport is required for both directions. Expect longer border waits on race weekend (September 26–27) than midweek.
Can I actually ride in the Adirondacks and Vermont from Lake Placid?
Yes — and it’s some of the best road cycling terrain in the eastern United States. Verified named rides from Lake Placid include the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway climb to 4,867 feet, the Ironman Lake Placid Loop, Wilmington Notch, the AuSable River Loop, Franklin Falls Loop, Bear Cub Road, and Styles Brook Road. Lake Champlain ferry crossings (Essex, NY or Port Kent, NY) put you in Vermont within reach of App Gap, Lincoln Gap, and the classic Gaps of Vermont loop. See lakeplacid.com’s cycling page for 20+ additional named routes.
Is downtown Montréal a good place to base for Road Worlds if I want to ride?
Downtown Montréal has real bike infrastructure and is a genuinely bike-friendly city — but riding options are urban. If your priority is a serious cycling week (climbs, gaps, gravel routes, long lake-adjacent rides), basing 130 miles south in Lake Placid gives you access to significantly better terrain. If your priority is walking to race spectator zones and eating in Montréal’s neighborhoods, staying downtown makes more sense.
What airports serve Lake Placid for a Road Worlds trip?
Closest options: Burlington International Airport (BTV) in Vermont, about 1.5 hours away including the Lake Champlain ferry crossing; Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG), about 1 hour; Montréal-Trudeau (YUL), about 2 hours (and you’ll cross the border twice). Some cyclists prefer flying into Burlington to bike-tour the Vermont Gaps on the way to Lake Placid.
Are there other cycling events in the Adirondacks that fall?
Yes. The 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Series — the final round of the World Cup, crowning the year’s overall Downhill and Cross-Country champions — runs at Mt Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface Mountain October 2–4, 2026. Five days after Road Worlds ends. Serious cyclists can catch both UCI world-tier events from a single Lake Placid base with a week of riding in between.
Can I bring my dog to a Road Worlds week in Lake Placid?
Yes — both GO-Cottage units are dog-friendly at $25/night per pet with a fenced yard (dogs go out on their own — no leash-required trips to a hotel lobby). Dogs are welcome throughout Lake Placid at restaurants with outdoor patios, on hiking trails, and on the Adirondack Rail Trail. For dog-friendly trails, patios, and vets, see the Lake Placid Dog-Friendly Guide.
